Hilton Worldwide is seeking a Director of Architecture and Construction Project Management in Memphis, TN.
The Director of Architecture and Construction Project Management will provide project management for new development, ground up projects, adaptive reuse projects, conversions, room additions, and brand change projects, as well as for renovation projects as needed. The Team Member will be responsible for providing technical guidance and services, enforcing design and construction standards, and for monitoring construction activities for Focused Service hotel projects. This includes reviewing architectural and engineering documents and conducting a minimum of three (3) on site construction inspections.
Other key priorities are listed below:
- Review hotel site plans as part of the franchise approval process for new hotels to ensure that the proposed site will support the proposed hotel in compliance with Hilton Worldwide standards and prototype drawings
- Conduct pre-design meetings with franchisee and architect for new projects
- Explain Hilton Worldwide Architecture and Construction role, as well as the standards and prototype drawings
- Review preliminary plans, 50% complete plans, and 100% complete plans and specifications in detail to ensure compliance with Hilton Worldwide standards and prototype drawings
- Review landscape, civil engineering, structural, architectural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical drawings and specifications
- Coordinate with Hilton Worldwide Senior Director Engineering Support as needed
- Address concerns immediately and provide detailed written correspondence to franchisee and architect explaining the non-complying issues and presenting solutions
- Conduct meetings, conference calls, and webinars as needed to explain Hilton Worldwide requirements to franchisee, architect, and other project Team Members
- Review construction submittals and shop drawings in detail to ensure compliance with Hilton Worldwide standards and prototype drawings
- Address concerns immediately and provide detailed written correspondence to franchisee, architect, and contractor explaining the non-complying issues and presenting solutions
- Visit the project during construction at least three(3) times to ensure compliance with Hilton Worldwide standards and prototype drawings and the approved plans that were submitted
- Address concerns immediately, in person, while at the site, and also provide detailed written correspondence following the site visit
- Continually update project data in O2O tracking system
- Provide accurate forecasted construction start and hotel opening dates for senior management forecasting purposes
- Review and propose revisions to standards and prototype drawings
- On occasion will prepare PIP reports and pre-evaluation reports and review with Architecture and Construction Vice President, PQI, and Development as needed. This includes a) Non Hilton Worldwide brand converting to Hilton Worldwide brand, b) Hotel that has been closed converting to Hilton Worldwide brand, and c) Hilton Worldwide brand converting to a different Hilton Worldwide brand
- Prepare sketches of possible solutions for commercial areas, guest rooms, exterior design, etc. and present to ownership as part of the pre-evaluation and PIP process
- Travel as necessary to accomplish the goals for the position while managing travel expenses within company guidelines and maximizing travel efficiencies

I hope you’re managing to stay warm today! In the past week, the temperatures have really gone down considerably. Hopefully, you’re taking advantage of the time inside and are focused on what else – your job search!
One topic that becomes very important during job searching is your e-mail etiquette. When you miss the boat on your e-mail communications, it’s rare that anyone will tell you directly. But, rest assured—they noticed and they’re talking about it.
Avoid being that person and take the time to consider the recommendations below. They’re very simple, and they will help tremendously.
- Upgrade your e-mail account. If you’re still stuck in the days of AOL, Comcast, or any older provider, it’s time to upgrade to Gmail or a similar service. If you’ve had your personal e-mail address for over 10 years, this may be you. Your e-mail address can indicate a few things – one being your age, and one being your level of sophistication when it comes to technology. Stay up to date to keep from being judged.
- Select a professional e-mail address. Stay away from e-mail addresses that include your birth year or graduation year. They provide unnecessary information about your age. Stay away from e-mails that contain casual nicknames or hobbies. Pick something that contains your first and last name if possible.
- Respond within 24 hours. When you receive an e-mail, respond within one day. Even if you don’t have the entire answer, respond to say you’ve received the message. You are your own brand and a product you’re marketing. As such, treat those you interact with as if they were your customers.
- Start your e-mails with your receipt’s name and end with your name. Job search related e-mails should start with something like “Dear Andrew, Thank you for your e-mail” and not with something like “Hey! Thank you for your e-mail.”
- If you must send a mass e-mail, use BCC. Blind Carbon Copy is the most professional way to send e-mail to a large group of people. Sending to a group and not hiding their e-mails shows lack of respect for personal privacy. It can also be very annoying when people begin to reply. That leads me to my next tip…
- If you receive a mass e-mail and must respond, reply directly. Unless it’s very important, don’t send a reply-all message. When you reply-all, everyone on the original e-mail receives a copy of your message. It can also trigger a number of other reply-all messages. You’ve probably had this happen before and can attest to how annoying it can be.
- Include a signature. At the bottom of your e-mail, you have the option to include a signature. This is a great thing to include! In addition to your name and e-mail, be sure it includes your phone number. So many people use your signature to find your phone number. When it’s not there, the experience can be difficult and they may give up.
These suggestions should be an extension of the everyday business etiquette you use. They will ensure you aren’t the subject of a discussion about how, “that person just doesn’t know how to use e-mail properly!”

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “European Job Hunt.” In it, I explore what it takes to move to Europe.
When I visited Dublin, Ireland, in 2013, I was surprised at what I found. It was a European city that in some ways reminded me of home. People were incredibly friendly. The culture was built around music, food and socializing. The city’s core is a similar size to Downtown Memphis, and it’s built around a river.
But, the part that truly stole my heart was the tech culture. In the past five years, a large number of U.S. dot-com companies have opened offices in Dublin. The list is too long to mention, but a few of the highlights include Google, LinkedIn, eBay, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, PayPal, Apple, Indeed and Etsy.
A few weeks ago, I took a trip back to learn more about the Dublin employment scene. A number of my clients have expressed interest in moving abroad, so I wanted to get the inside scoop.
