Networking Opportunity: South Main Association Monthly Meeting

The South Main Association is having their monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 12th.  It will be held at The Blues Foundation, at 421 South Main Street.

The featured speaker is Mei-Ann Chen.  An innovative and passionate force both on and off the conductor’s podium, Mei-Ann Chen is one of America’s most dynamic young conductors. Music Director of the Memphis Symphony since 2010 and of the Chicago Sinfonietta since 2011, she has infused both orchestras with energy, enthusiasm and high-level music-making, galvanizing their audiences and communities alike.

I have seen Mei-Ann in concert and she is amazing to say the least.  I cannot wait to hear her speak.

Additionally, the South Main Association meetings are a great place to meet professionals who live downtown.  In fact, in 2006, I found a job during a SMA meeting!  The lesson is: always bring your business cards.

The event begins with networking at 6:00 PM.  At 6:30 PM, the speaker and program will begin.  The cost is $10 for guests.  There will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

To learn more, visit the SMA website here.

Networking Opportunity: 48 Hour Launch

48 Hour Launch is one of my favorite networking activities for technology professionals.  It takes an entire weekend of your time, but if you can make the time, you should.  You will make contacts during the course of the weekend that you will keep for years, and who may help you to find a job in the future.

48 Hour Launch begins on Friday, November 15th at 6 PM and lasts until Sunday, November 17th around 9 PM.  The cost for the weekend is $40 and it includes meals.  It’s a great deal.

Throughout the weekend, teams will help to build businesses from the ground up.  On Friday, attendees will have two minutes to pitch their business ideas.  The top 5 will be selected to move forward.  The professionals will divide themselves into 5 teams to contribute their skills and expertise.

On Sunday at 6 PM, the 5 teams will compete in a pitch competition where they will present to the Memphis community.  The winning team will receive a $1,000 prize.

If you can’t attend for the entire weekend and are an IT or digital marketing professional, consider attending the pitch competition on Sunday.  It’s a great opportunity to network.

Networking Opportunity: Joy to the Wine

For those who love wine, there is a wine event coming up next week.  Joy to the Wine is just $35 and benefits Porter-Leath.  It will be held on Wednesday, November 13th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at the Botanic Garden.

Despite this event being somewhat social in nature, it’s still a great opportunity to get out and meet new professionals.  Additionally, tickets to many fundraisers are more than $100, so at $35, this one is a great deal.

If you are not familiar with Porter-Leath, here’s a little more information about what they do:

For over 160 years, Porter-Leath has been the primary resource for Memphis’ at-risk children and families. By focusing on the essential building blocks of healthy development, we not only give them access to the tools they need, but also a sense of hope. The result is Porter-Leath helps build stronger children, stronger families and a stronger Memphis.

It will be fun networking for a great cause.  To learn more, visit their website here.
